French Black Copper Marans - WE NO LONGER BREED THESE
Black Copper Marans Rooster bred by us
The Black Copper Marans are a rare bird in Canada. They originated in France where their dark shelled, large yolked eggs were sought out and prized by french chefs. The production of this bird was brought about simply to produce their beautiful, gourmet egg.
The Black Copper Marans are a good sized bird, and their legs must be lightly feathered to meet the french standards. Their eggs should be a number 4 on the scale of Marans eggs (or darker) to qualify them as quality laying birds. We have combined birds from France and Greendale Heritage Farms to create our wonderful flock that will be producing hatching eggs and chicks in early spring, 2012. In 2014 we again added to our flock from Bulbs of Fire and Greenfire Farms (direct import from GFF in spring 2014).
We have included photos below of the eggs typical of our flock of French Black Copper Marans. Our hens are wonderful layers, very consistent regardless of the weather and temperature outside. Please take into consideration that these eggs have all been photographed indoors, and the only type of light we have is flourescent lighting. The eggs do appear a bit darker in person, ranging between a 4-6 on the Marans scale.
Unfortunately we are not able to guarantee the egg color of the hens or chicks you purchase from us. We do our best to only breed the hens laying the darkest of eggs to the roosters that have hatched from dark eggs but once in a while we do get a pullet that will lay lighter eggs.
Exciting News! TripleJFarms of Calmar, Alberta participated in the big poultry show in Red Deer Dec 9/10/11 and we are so proud that a Black Copper Marans rooster bred here at Briarwood Poultry won the
Marans breed and came reserve in the Continental class. A black copper marans hen bred here came in 2nd for breed (photos below). Way to go TripleJFarms!
