Solid Blue Marans (Blue/Black/Splash)
We are very pleased to be able to introduce our Blue Marans, after working with them for over a year. They are similar to the black copper variety, however these are solid blue marans - they lack the copper hackle feathers on the hens, and the roosters are beautiful solid blue.
They come from solid colored parent stock, though there is the chance that the odd chick may develop some copper leakage in the feathers at maturity. This is not ideal and individuals that develop copper should not be used for further breeding.
We have been working with this variety since mid 2011 and they have won themselves a place in our barn through their hearty, vigorous nature, their egg laying capabilities, and their calm disposition. Not to mention the dalmatian like appearance of the splash hens is just plain fun to have around!
Like with all blue poultry, they come in blue, black and splash. We have blue and splash hens with a blue rooster, so we will have blue, black and lots of splash chicks available!
Our Blue Marans are from two different lines -Dan Prather and Bev Davis. As they are a new variety of marans, we are still working hard to achieve the dark egg color. One of our lines lays a beautiful dark egg that is large in size, and the other line lays an equally large egg, however it tends to lighten more quickly then the other line. We are working on combining the two lines to create a more genetically diverse bird that is capable of vigorous reproduction and laying dark marans eggs!
Our blue marans are mostly feather legged however it is possible to hatch chicks with lightly/non feathered legs. These lovely blue marans are the same standard size as the black coppers and wheaten marans we breed.
Unfortunately we are not able to guarantee the egg color of the hens or chicks you purchase from us. We do our best to only breed the hens laying the darkest of eggs to the roosters that have hatched from dark eggs but once in a while we do get a pullet that will lay lighter eggs.
