Sulmtaler - Gold Duckwing & White - Flock for sale!
The sulmtaler is another rare and ancient breed of chicken from Austria/Styria dating back to the 1400's. They were created using the Alsterier along with a few other breeds. They are renowned in their home country for their round, well muscled bodies and extraordinary meat qualities. Hens are also practical as they are calm and lay large quantities of eggs. They are very healthy and robust chicks that are just bursting with life and excitement. They can be sexed around 3 weeks of age as they begin to feather in, pullets are wheaten in colour and cockerels have black in their wing/neck/back feathers. Similar to the Alsterier, they have crests as well as a distinct "s" shaped comb, giving them their own unique look without deterring from their practicality as a dual purpose bird. They were imported to Briarwood Poultry from Greenfire Farms in April 2014. We do have one white sulmtaler pullet and will be working on creating a Briarwood line of whites. White Sulmtaler are an extremely rare variety, even in their home country, and we are pleased to have this beautiful girl here!
For the 2016 breeding season we have included 2 very light alsterier pullets in our Sulmtaler breeding pen to help increase genetic diversity, as well as adding in 3 new roosters from Greendale Heritage Farm for maximum diversity. The alsteriers are one of the foundational breeds used to create the Sulmtalers, and the pullets we have chosen are almost identical to our Sulmtaler hens.
