Long ago we kept Barnevelders, when we were first starting out with chickens. We had hatchery barnevelders and although they were beautiful, they weren't really what they should be. As we moved our focus to well bred heritage breeds, we lost track of them over the years.
Recently we have had the opportunity to acquire a small flock of direct US imported Silver Barnevelders via Bambina's Poultry. This flock lives on our Mill Bay farm. We have purchased additional Silver Laced Barnevelders from WestCoast Farms as well as an Alberta breeder who imports from the UK as our small flock at our Sherwood Park, AB farm and are pleased to see this breed making it's way into Canada. They are a hardy, productive breed that is second to none for beauty.
Please note: our flocks in BC and Alberta are of 2 different lineages, and would be compatible crosses to work with!
Blue & Standard Barnevelders
While we were flying our Silver Laced Orpingtons & Silver Barnevelders in from WestCoast Farms to our Sherwood Park, AB farm, we thought "what the heck, let's get some blues too". They. Are. Gorgeous. And hardy. They might even be nicer then the blue laced red wyandottes that we have been committed to for over a decade. They are excellent free rangers and grew well despite flying to the middle of the ice and snow in the thick of our -40 winters. We have added in a local show line of standard barnevelder as well (pictured here - she's crabby because it's hot and she has to put up with 'kids', but they are lovely). In fall of 2018, we also purchased birds of 2 lines from Bambina's poultry, photos below of actual birds purchased. The splash cock is out of an Alberta breeder who imports from the UK. The standard hens are direct US imports.
We will be breeding these beauties in spring and are SO excited to see what they have to offer us.
