Alsteirer or Styrian Hen
Alsterier or Styrian hen is an ancient breed of chicken that dates back to one of the first breeds in the Styrian region of Austria/Styria. Some records trace the existence of this breed back to the 13th century. It is believed that they were foundational for many of the modern mediterranean breeds we see now. They are a crested breed, though their crests are small and compact and give them a little extra "pop". They are dual purpose, medium body size that lays a large number of white eggs every year. They have a round body that makes them an excellent table bird, while the hens are calm and rarely go broody. We imported the black breasted red variety directly from Greenfire Farms in April 2014. They are fascinating birds, hardy, independent, yet inquisitive. They have a rich history, are easy to care for, vigorous and produce food in large quantities on top of being extremely rare. This is a breed we feel lucky to be able to work with for years to come!
Our flock began to lay at exactly 18 weeks of age and we have been getting eggs from them daily since then! You just can't beat that for productivity!
